Emilija Škarnulytė

Emilija Škarnulytė is a Lithuanian-born artist and filmmaker whose work explores deep time, ecological collapse and the shifting boundaries between science and myth. Moving between documentary and speculative fiction, her immersive films and installations transport viewers to decommissioned nuclear sites, deep-sea data centres and submerged cities.
Her practice invites reflection on the structures that shape our world, often working in extreme or hidden environments to reveal the traces of human and non-human histories. Through sound, image and scale, Škarnulytė creates sensory experiences that raise urgent questions about time, technology and survival.
She is the winner of the 2023 Ars Fennica Award and the 2019 Future Generation Art Prize. Her work has been shown internationally at venues including the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Palais de Tokyo, Villa Medici, Gwangju Biennale and Helsinki Biennale. Recent solo exhibitions include Kunsthall Trondheim, Canal Projects and Kunsthaus Göttingen.
Her films are held in major collections including the Centre Pompidou, Kadist Foundation, Kiasma and Fondazione In Between Art and Film. A solo exhibition at Tate St Ives opens in October 2025.
She lives and works between Tromsø and Berlin.
